Now, those who read my site or my other writings around the web will know first-hand; I love lists. They are a great way to convey your thoughts on any number of topics. Sure, a lot of people will say that a list blog is taking a shortcut in writing a genuine post, but if you think about the amount of time that has to go into researching a list in order to do it justice, it really isn’t a shortcut at all.
That said, at this time of year, there are a number of list blogs posted that coincide with the year end. Add to that the end of the decade, and it can be a little overwhelming at times. So in the spirit of not overwhelming anyone, or getting lost in the crowd, I’m simply going to cast my opinion on a couple of lists I’ve perused over the last week or so. Make sure you check them out and appreciate the effort that these folks put forward.
- Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a couple of ardent Best Of lists to do with movies. In particular, a couple of items jumped out at me that I thought were fairly brave. First, their pick for best Super Hero Film of the Decade was The Incredibles. Given that the decade was pretty much the coming out party for the comic book crowd, this is a well, incredible selection. The Incredibles was an amazing film with a great story. Personally, I would have liked to see V For Vendetta get one of SpiderMan’s slots, but hey, its not my list.
Second, I loved the fact that Shaun of the Dead (Top R-Rated Comedies) and Kung Fu Hustle (Top Martial Arts) got love in their respective categories. They didn’t take home the top prizes, but they showed that a spoof film could still be well made without resorting to cheap jokes.
Finally, there was the category of Best Disaster Movie, which in my opinion, was a complete disaster. Their choice of Steven Spielberg’s War Of The Worlds was horrible. Personally, I thought The Day After Tomorrow was a better film, but if you expanded the category a bit, you could have topped that list with Children of Men. Trust me, a film about an infertile society is about as much of a disaster as there can be.
- Of the various sites with Best Movie Trailers of the decade, there is a pretty wide variety of choices put forward. Everyone seems to be in love with Where the Wild Things Are, but in my personal opinion, a trailer should leave the viewer intriqued and wanting more. For me, no film did that more than Cloverfield, which gave a hint at what was to come, but left the audience absolutely wanting to see the movie. Judge for yourselves.
- Top 10 Reviews has a compiled list of the Top 10 Actors and Actresses of the 2000’s and it is an interesting list to say the least. The most interesting selection of course is the inclusion of Emma Watson, who played Hermoine Granger in the the Harry Potter films, as the number 2, ranking her above George Clooney and Matt Damon. Clooney deserves his mention in the top 3, as he’s compiled a very solid litany of work over the decade. Don’t even get me started on the criminal charges that should be brought up for not including Denzel Washington in the top 10. And who thought it was brilliant to place Catherine Zeta-Jones in the top 5?
- Finally, we have Moviefone’s compilation of the Best Movies of the Decade. Ranking The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King as number one is auspicious at best, as it isn’t even the best movie of the trilogy. The top film actually resides as far down as 30, in Pan’s Labyrinth. Simultaneously telling a story of fantasy and a war torn countries demise was breathtaking to behold and heartbreaking to witness.
